First Birthday cake

It is so nice to make a cake for one of my own kids once in a while. It is so much less stressful, I just baked a 9x13 cake and cut it into a 1 shape and frosted it with butter cream, so simple.

Roller Skate cake

With this cake I made a sheet cake and just cut it into the shape of a boot and then added wheels and stoppers. The hardest part was covering the wheels. I tried to frost them but they didn't quite look like roller skate wheels. I covered them with fondant and they looked much better.

Graduation cake

This was my first attempt at books. Not perfect but okay. I made the hat out of a cupcake and the NHS out of a cookie.

Cookie Monster cake

Cute!

Elmo cake

If I did this again I would have made Elmo's nose 3d like his eyes. You can't see it in the picture but around the edge of the cake I wrote the ABC's. Jacob loved it!

90th Birthday cake

It's not often that anyone gets aked to make a cake for a 90th birthday party! The cake is decorated with little fondant figures to represent his life and hobbys. There is a golf bag and hole, an iron foundry man, a tuba, a black lab and an old buzzard. The old buzzard was requested after they saw my Over the Hill cake. There are actually 90 candles on top. I was told that when they tried to light them the top of the cake turned into a little fire ball. The candles all started to melt and make a mess! It would have been funny to see.

Fire Extinguisher cake

The images on this cake were printed by the grocery store on edible paper. I made this cake at 3am so considering the crazy time that I made it- I am happy with it. If I had had more time I would have paid more attention to detail. Like making sure the red lines were straight etc. I made this cake the same day as a 90th birthday topsy turvy cake so I just ran out of time!

Fire Engine cake

For this baby shower cake I was given pictures of some fire fighter crib bedding and was asked to make a cake using the bedding as a guide. The bedding is super cute so it was hard to make a cake like it. The fire engine in white almond cake with raspberry filling and the bottom cake is half white almond/raspberry and half chocolate/vanilla buttercream. Everything is mm fondant. It took me about 10 hours to decorate this cake. It looks so simple I don't know why it took so long. Even though it took a long time to make I think it came out so great. Did you notice the licence plate? It says Baby. The details on the dog and firefighter and some of the truck are hand painted. Really a cute cake. It's almost too bad that they have to cut it!

Vintage car cake

************************************************************These little fondant cars are supposed to be replicas of the birthday boys real cars. Cars are a very hard thing to make because the don't sit on the ground. Somehow I had to make them appear as though they were sitting on the wheels. It took me a while to figure this out but in the end I set each car on a thick rectangle of fondant. This seemed to work out okay. I hand painted the cars with food coloring and luster dust. A very simple cake yet it was a lot of work!

Dinosaur cake

I didn't intend for this cake to look like a Flintstones cake I was just trying to make a dinosaur cake with a cave man. However several people said "oh wow, a Flintstones cake!" I made the dinosaurs head and neck with fondant. I had to put a dowel in the neck to help it to stand up.
I made the head several days in advance so that it would have time to harden up. For the body of the dinosaur I baked a cake in a small metal bowl and covered it in fondant. Even though everyone thought it was a Flintstones cake I was happy with how it came out.

Dirt Bike Cake

I really wanted this cake to be rustic so I frosted the cake with butter cream and used food coloring spray to add grass. I made cones out of fondant and snipped them with scissors for the trees. The dirt is oreo and graham cracker crumbs mixed together and the chocolate rocks were some that I had left after making the Over the Hill cake. The best part of the cake was that if you gently push down on the dirt bike it made a realistic dirt bike sound.

Over the Hill

My husbands boss was turning 50 and so an over the hill cake was requested. Her favorite color is purple so that had to be coordinated into the cake, of course. The old goat and the old buzzard are pretty funny. I covered the cake with tan fondant and sprayed it green with spray food coloring. My mom sent me a package of chocolate rocks to use, those rocks really added a lot to the cake.

Jungle Cake

This cake was for a Jungle themed baby shower. The animals are made from mm fondant and the trees are fondant leaves with pretzel rods for trunks. The trees are so fragile it always stresses me out to make a cake with trees. I "glue" the leaves onto the pretzel rod with melted sugar. The melted sugar dries quickly and so it is the best thing to use. It is very hot though, I usually burn myself a few times in the process.

Penguin Topsy Turvy Cake

This year my son had a birthday party with 3 friends that all had the same birthday as him. Because this cake was for four birthdays I wanted to make something extra fun. My son requested penguins and snow flakes and I wanted to try a topsy turvy cake. This is what we came up with. He really loved it. It was really fun to make the penguins playing in the snow. And for my first topsy turvy cake I was happy with it.

Pink and Black Wedding Cake

This is the third wedding cake I have done and I think it came out the best. Delivering this cake was a bit stressful. I always worry about them cracking in the car. I really like the Calla Lilly's on this cake. I got them from save-on-crafts.com They are very realistic looking.

Easter Basket Cake

When I was asked to make a coconut cake for a work party I decided to make the cake look like an Easter basket. This was my first attempt at the basket weave with buttercream. I made the little bunny and bird with mm fondant and the handle is aluminum foil wrapped with fondant. The bow was a little tricky. I had to put it on with a tooth pick. The little eggs are malted milk balls, they taste awful but they sure are cute!

Super Mario Cake

When I found out that I had to make a Mario cake I went right out and bought the video game- the kids were happy about that! Mario took me 3 hours to make. He is made from homemade mm fondant. The design of the cake is level 1-1 of the Wii game. Making this cake reminded me of my childhood. I remember the old gray Nintendo. We always had to blow on the games to get them to work. Playing the Nintendo really irritated Mom, she thought playing games turned our brains to mush. She would always tell us that we had "Nintendo eyes"- I guess that meant we were staring at the screen for too long. She is just not a gamer. After hours of work I am really happy about how the cake turned out and the birthday boy loved it!. That makes all of my hard work worth it.

Hawaiian Bridal Shower Cake

This cake was done for a Hawaiian themed bridal shower. The umbrella and tree were so fun to make. All of the decorations on the top are shaped with mm fondant, which is so easy to make and to work with. I molded the umbrella around a ball and let it dry for a few days. For the handle I used a lollipop stick attached with melted sugar. For the tree I made a donut shape out of plastic wrap, then I made the leaves and set them in a ring shape on the plastic wrap donut and let that dry for a few days. I attached the pretzel "trunk" with melted sugar. The flower lei's and the umbrella handle are the only things that aren't edible on this cake. This is one of my favorite cakes- it came out so pretty!
